How much grass can a horse eat in an hour?
Somewhere between 0.6 and 2.2 lb (0.3–1.0 kg) of dry matter, and which end of that it lands on depends on something most advice ignores: how long the horse expects to be out there.
Colorado’s working figure puts an hour at grass as replacing 2.75 lb of grass hay in spring and 1.75 lb in summer.
As grass rather than dry matter — water and all — an hour at the fast end is roughly 9 lb (4 kg) of standing pasture through the horse’s mouth.
The rate is not flat, and that is the whole point
The instinct behind restricted turnout is arithmetic: if a horse eats a day’s forage in twenty-four hours, three hours should give it an eighth of a day’s forage.
It does not.
A University of Minnesota study measured pasture dry matter intake at four different lengths of access, and horses on the shortest window ate at 3.4 times the hourly rate of horses out all day.

Read across it. Three hours of turnout does not deliver an eighth of what twenty-four hours does — it delivers about 43% of it.
Cutting turnout from nine hours to three roughly halves intake rather than cutting it to a third.
Treat those as relative rates rather than as a ration.
The horses in the trial were fasted before turnout and grazed a specific tall fescue pasture, so the absolute figures run differently from a horse living out on mixed grass.
What transfers is the shape: intake per hour falls steeply as the window lengthens.
The mechanism is not mysterious.
A horse that has learned the gate shuts at eleven grazes with purpose from the moment it is turned out; a horse with the whole day in front of it wanders, dozes, and picks.
Horses on full turnout typically graze for around sixteen of the twenty-four hours, and rest for the others.
The practical consequence matters for any horse on restricted grazing for weight or laminitis risk: halving the hours does not halve the grass.
If the target is a real reduction in intake, hours alone will not get you there, which is exactly why grazing muzzles exist — they cut the bite size rather than the time.
How much grass can a horse eat in an hour, in hay terms
The more useful version of the question for most owners is what an hour of turnout is worth against the hay bill.

Those are averages for a normal turnout rather than a rate to multiply out to a full day. Spring grass is leafier, wetter and more digestible than midsummer growth, which is why the figure falls by about 36% between the two seasons.
Even so, the numbers are not small.
Four hours a day through a spring month saves roughly 330 lb of grass hay — most of a small round bale, or several small squares, for the cost of opening a gate.
How much grass should I let my horse eat?
For most horses the honest answer is as much as it wants.
Intake settles at 1.5% to 2.5% of body weight in dry matter a day — 17 to 28 lb for an 1,100 lb horse — and that is what a horse is built to do.
Restriction is for a reason rather than by default, and there are two:
- Weight. An easy keeper on good spring pasture will get fat, and obesity is the commonest welfare problem in leisure horses.
- Sugar. Non-structural carbohydrate in grass peaks in spring and autumn growth. In a horse with equine metabolic syndrome or a laminitis history that alone can be enough, and the risk is not proportional to the amount eaten in the way weight gain is.
For either, the tools that work are a grazing muzzle, a track or strip-grazed allocation, or a drylot with tested hay — not simply a shorter turnout, for the reason the table above sets out.
Why the moisture matters
Every figure on this page is dry matter unless it says otherwise, and the difference is large. Fresh pasture is 20–30% dry matter against baled hay’s 90%, so a pound of grass and a pound of hay are not the same feed at all.
It is also why grazing takes so long.
To get 22 lb of dry matter off a field a horse has to process 73 to 110 lb of grass, and there is a limit to how fast anything can bite and chew.
A maintenance horse needs six to ten hours at grass to take a full ration off it, and a young growing horse can need fifteen.

What the evidence here adds is that shortening the turnout window is a weaker tool than it looks — the horse compensates by grazing faster. A muzzle, a strip-grazed allocation or a drylot with tested hay all cut intake more reliably than the clock does.
How much hay should a 1000 pound horse eat a day?
About 20 lb of dry matter at 2% of body weight, which as baled hay at roughly 90% dry matter is about 22 lb of hay. Turnout offsets it directly: every hour at spring grass is about 2.75 lb of that hay you do not have to feed.
How many hours a day does a horse need to graze?
Six to ten hours to take a full day’s forage off pasture at maintenance, and up to fifteen for a young growing horse. Horses on full turnout typically graze for around sixteen hours out of twenty-four and rest for the rest.
Anything under about three hours is exercise and company rather than a meal.
Can a horse eat too much grass in an hour?
A horse with no metabolic history, no.
A laminitis-prone horse on spring or autumn pasture, yes — and the short-window gorging effect is precisely why a brief turnout is not the safe compromise it looks like.
