How many horses per acre by state?

Search for how many horses per acre by state and you will find tables with fifty rows in them. There is no honest table of horses per acre by state, and every site publishing one is filling cells with guesses.

The reason is simple enough to state in a sentence: state lines are political and forage production is ecological, and the two have nothing to do with each other. Texas contains both the wettest and the driest rows of the table below. So does Colorado, so does California, so does Oregon. A single figure for any of them is an average of things that should never have been averaged.

What can be published honestly is the range US pasture actually falls into, and the method for finding where your own ground sits in it.

Between the poorest and best ground on that table there is a 20-fold difference in what an acre grows. No state-level number survives a spread like that, and neither does the familiar rule of thumb: 2 to 3 acres a horse is Kentucky extension’s figure for year-round grazing, which is the third row and nothing else.

Note the last two columns. Moving from one open field to weekly paddock rotation changes the answer by about as much as moving a state or two, because horses in an open field eat only about 33% of what grows while horses moved between paddocks eat 45%. Management is worth roughly as much as geography, and it is the half you control.

Why the variation inside a state beats the variation between states

Two neighbouring fields differ more than most people expect. Wisconsin’s published yield tables give tall fescue on limed, fertilised, rotationally grazed ground at 7,940 lb of dry matter an acre and Kentucky bluegrass on unfertilised, continuously grazed ground at 1,900 — a 4.2-fold difference within one region, driven by what is sown and how it is looked after.

Soil type, drainage, slope and aspect all move it again. A south-facing slope is ready to graze two to three weeks before the north-facing side of the same hill. Your neighbour’s stocking rate is better evidence than your state’s average, and your own hay yields are better evidence than your neighbour’s.

Season length is the one thing that does track latitude reasonably well. The Midwest growing season runs from about 142 days in northern Minnesota to 185 in southern Wisconsin, and the South and the irrigated West run longer. A shorter season needs proportionally more land for the same horse, and the months either side are hay wherever you are.

How many acres per horse for grazing, on your ground

Four ways to get a real figure, roughly in order of how good they are:

  • Your own hay records. If you have ever cut hay off the ground, divide the bales by the acres and multiply by the bale weight. That is a direct measurement of your field in your climate, and it beats every table on this page.
  • Measure the standing grass. Good pasture carries roughly 275 lb of dry matter per acre for every inch of grass above your stubble height; fair pasture about 175, an excellent stand about 350. Measure the height, subtract the 3 to 4 inches you intend to leave, multiply.
  • Clip and weigh. Cut a square yard at grazing height, weigh it, dry a sample in a microwave alongside a cup of water until the weight stops falling, and scale up. Fiddly, an afternoon’s work, and exact for your field.
  • Ask your county extension office or the NRCS. They hold local forage-production figures by soil type, which is the resolution the question actually needs. It is a phone call, and it is free.

Whichever you use, put the number into the pasture calculator instead of the regional default, and the answer stops being an average of Texas.

What the state actually does decide

One thing genuinely varies by jurisdiction, and it is not the grass: local zoning. Some counties and municipalities set minimum lot sizes for keeping livestock, or cap animal units per acre, and those rules are written by planning departments rather than by agronomists. They are a legal floor, not a statement about what your field will carry, and the two numbers can point in opposite directions.

If you are buying land, check the zoning separately from the grazing. A parcel can comfortably feed four horses and be zoned for two, or be zoned for ten and feed one.

Ten acres, five answers

As a worked example of why the state question is the wrong question, take ten acres and change nothing but the ground and the management:

  • Ten acres of irrigated pasture, rotated: about 9.1 horses.
  • Ten acres of average mid-country pasture, rotated: about 5.0.
  • The same ten acres grazed as one open field: about 3.7.
  • Ten acres of northern pasture, one field: about 2.9.
  • Ten acres of dryland range in the arid West: about 0.8.

Those five answers span more than a factor of ten, and all of them are for ten acres and 1,100 lb horses through the same 180-day season. Any table that gives one number per state has quietly picked one of them and hoped.

Common questions about stocking rates by state

How many acres per horse for grazing?

Between 0.73 acres (0.3 ha) on irrigated ground grazed hard and 12 acres (4.9 ha) on dryland range grazed as one field, for a 180-day season. On average mid-country pasture it is 2.71 acres (1.1 ha) continuously grazed or 1.99 acres (0.81 ha) rotated. The familiar two acres is the middle of that, quoted as though it were all of it.

How many horses can you have on 10 acres?

About 3.7 on average mid-country pasture grazed as one field, 5.0 rotated, and 0.8 on dryland range. The land does not decide it on its own; what grows on it and how you graze it do.

Is 2.5 acres enough for 3 horses?

Not to feed them on ordinary ground. Two and a half acres of average pasture carries about 0.9 horses grazed as one field and 1.3 rotated, so three horses means hay for much of the year and a sacrifice area if the field is to survive. On irrigated ground, rotated, it is closer to workable at about 2.3.

Is 10 acres enough for 5 horses?

On decent ground, yes. Ten acres of average mid-country pasture carries about 3.7 horses grazed as one field and 5.0 rotated, so five is comfortable with rotation and marginal without it. On dryland range it is nowhere near enough.

Why do acres-per-horse figures vary so much between websites?

Because they are quoting different regions without saying so, and often quoting each other. The underlying arithmetic is not in dispute — it is annual forage yield times the share the horses actually eat, divided by what a horse eats in a season. Plug Kentucky’s numbers in and you get two acres; plug Nevada’s in and you get twenty-something. Both are right about their own ground.

How do I find the forage production figure for my county?

Your county extension office and the local NRCS office both hold forage-production data by soil type, which is the resolution this question needs and the resolution a state average destroys. If you have cut hay off the ground yourself, that record is better still: bales per acre times bale weight is a direct measurement of your own field in your own climate.
